Enthusiasm won’t get you hired. Knowledge & experience won’t either.

Age Discrimination

Age Discrimination is difficult to prove. Especially when looking for work. The opportunities are there. You have the experience. You ace the interview. It’s when you have the face-to-face interview. It doesn’t matter if it’s in-person or via Zoom.

The phone interview

It goes well. You answer all of their questions, and they answer yours. It seems like a good fit. You know you can bring your expertise to the position and have a positive impact.

Take note — this is the second time around with this particular company. The previous time you talked with a different recruiter. You had a great rapport. The conversation flowed. She was impressed with your knowledge. She didn’t have to explain the industry or the position.

The second recruiter, you could tell she didn’t have an understanding of the industry. In other circumstances, I would say she didn’t have a clue. She was 25 minutes late to the call. Not hearing from her, I called her & left a message. She called back almost immediately, with a little apology and rushed through a list of routine recruiter questions. Over the phone, even I could tell this.

She did though get me to the next interview.

Woohoo — I made the next round

This time was a video call. It was scheduled with the Regional Sales Manager for the area I applied for. The call would include another RSM too.

At the beginning of the call, the area RSM said she remembered my name. She had planned to talk with me the first time I applied. That one was cancelled as I had let them know the area they wanted to fill was eliminating short-term rentals. That ended up putting the kibosh on that. They probably would have figured it out on their own later, but I was the one that brought it to their attention.

Anyway…moving forward.

Again, I answered all their questions. The interview was quite conversational. I asked appropriate questions when it was my turn. I was confident and said I would be a great fit with the existing Sales Executive. I hadn’t met her personally, but I had spoken with her over the phone…
